Our friend Maurice (aka Moe) made a great suggestion: write a brief post about each nominated cause. So I'm going to cover them in chronological order, starting with this, our very first nominee by donor llemarie.
Mickaboo is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Our basic goal is to rescue parrots and other commonly domesticated companion birds who have been neglected, abused, injured or surrendered to us because their owners can no longer care for them. To accomplish this goal, we do the following:
- Provide medical care and safe, healthy, foster homes for the rescued birds we take in.
- Take in and rehabilitate injured or sick conures from the San Francisco "Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill” flock.
- Find and educate quality adoptive homes for the birds in our foster care.
- Inform avian caregivers on the most current standards of care via our free classes, online resources, and consultations.
- Educate the public about the tragedies of overpopulation, and encourage them to adopt, not buy or breed birds.

Dear Mickaboo Folks,
My Sally Girl passed away after our 10 year partnership. I’ve kept birds most of my life. And as I’ve grown older, I find myself living alone. Sally is a Caique. And was chosen for the Caique’s nature of entertain themselves. When not with the flock. Which was me. And anyone else who ventured into our home.
She wasn’t just a Bird in a cage. We saw and talked with each other off and on through out the day. And every evening we spent several hours, playing and cuddling and then she climbed into my vest and went to sleep. We’re Rockhounds, and traveled the Western states together, collecting pretty rocks. And Sally is well known to the Rockhounding / Camping community. I’m ready to start thinking about another Feathered partner. After learning about your good work, I’d like to ask if you have a line on a Caique in need of fostering or adoption. Or if you have anybody else that might fit into my life.
In my 67 years, I’ve kept Amazon Parrots, Conures and a variety of smaller and soft billed birds at home. And handled Cockatoos and Macaws, working in the Pet Industry.
But I no longer live in a bustling household, or with an entertaining family.
I’ve arrived at the feeling that Birds don’t belong with People.
I put everything I’ve learned, into acclimating and socializing Sally. But have always been touched, that without each other, there is something huge missing in their minds.
All this to say, I no longer support the breading of Parrot Type Birds. But I think I might be able ease the life of one of the Kids, left behind.
