November 2020 winner The Movement for Black Lives

Charitocracy's 51st check to November winner The Movement for Black Lives for $1473

We have good news about November winner The Movement for Black Lives, right after this quick update...

The Giving Season Returns

It's only a week past Thanksgiving and we're already well into December. I feel like this one snuck up on me!

If you had trouble deciding which causes to support on Giving Tuesday, drowning in pleas coming from every direction, consider a two-pronged solution. Step 1: give more dollars to more charities by increasing your monthly donation here at Charitocracy USA and/or adding a new donation to Charitocracy OBX. Step 2: invite a few friends to join us here at Charitocracy!

November 2020 winner The Movement for Black Lives

On Giving Tuesday we named Charitocracy's 51st monthly winner. Congratulations to The Movement for Black Lives, nominated by donor jessica.e.pierce. M4BL create a shared vision and policy agenda to win rights, recognition, and resources for Black people. You can find their website here.

After Equal Justice Initiative and Color Of Change earlier this year, it's humbling to see our Charitocracy community come together once again to support M4BL. If 2020 has any upside, it's the long overdue attention drawn to this movement. So let's sustain the momentum into 2021. Now's a great time to nominate the charity you think should win next!

Now you have 4 more days to further sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to M4BL next week. We've already gotten one, in fact! And we're just $2 away from crossing the $1500 mark... Just saying. 😉

So please take 2 minutes to watch Daveed Diggs, at the height of this summer's national uprising against racist violence, ask what the Fourth of July means to Black people in America right now. Then feel good about your part in our collective $1498+ grant to help advance the movement.

Have a great December, stay safe, and be sure to log into Charitocracy to update your votes or nominate a new cause!

Spotlight on nominee First Concern Pregnancy Resource Center

Nominee First Concern Pregnancy Resource Center

Next in our series of posts about new Charitocracy nominees, we have nominee First Concern Pregnancy Resource Center, nominated by donor Maggie. They offer confidential, free pregnancy tests and peer counseling in Central Mass. You can find their web site here.

A few words on Charitocracy

Firstly, for newcomers: here's how it works. Donors pool their monthly contributions, as little as $1. The cause with the most votes each month wins the pot. No matter how much or how little you contribute, each donor at Charitocracy gets one vote. This is where charity meets democracy. So please share this post (see social sharing icons at top of post) and ask your friends to join us and vote! That's how we spread the word and, as a result, grow the monthly pot. The bigger the pot, the bigger our positive impact on the world!

About nominee First Concern Pregnancy Resource Center

Please familiarize yourself with the definition of pregnancy resource centers, also known as crisis pregnancy centers. These nonprofit organizations "typically run by Christians who adhere to a strictly socially conservative viewpoint" ... "are established to persuade pregnant women against having an abortion" and "have also frequently been found to disseminate false medical information, usually about the supposed physical and mental health risks of abortion." (See Wikipedia page for references.)

Whether this information makes you more or less likely to want to vote for First Concern is a very personal decision. But since their web site (quoted below) doesn't explicitly mention steering clients away from abortion, I figured I should mention that's the typical pattern. Note that I have no direct knowledge of First Concern specifically. Beyond counseling, it appears that First Concern offers other valuable services to their community. So, now you know, and knowing is half the battle! (The other half is lasers.)

It’s Your Choice

If you recently found out you’re pregnant and don’t know what to do next, we are here for you. Know that you have more options than you think, as well as the time to explore each of those options fully. Many women and men feel rushed to make a decision regarding their unplanned pregnancy or feel pressure from friends and family to make a certain decision regarding the outcome of their pregnancy.

However, only you can make the decision that’s right for you. The best way to make an educated decision about your unplanned pregnancy is to learn about your options and talk to an objective, third-party about how each option would impact your life.

At First Concern Pregnancy Resource Center, we can be that objective, third-party. Our goal is to listen to you and provide you with updated information and resources about parenting, adoption and abortion. Learn more about each option by clicking the links below.

Abortion Pill Reversal

If you’ve taken the first pill of RU-486 and have changed your mind, it may not be too late! You may qualify for Abortion Pill Reversal. Contact the 24/7 Hotline immediately to learn if you are eligible. How does abortion pill reversal work? After taking the first pill in the abortion pill series, you may...

Abortion

You may be considering abortion if you are unsure of whether you want to continue with your pregnancy. Often, women feel that abortion is their only option because they feel unsupported or feel pressure from others to end their pregnancy. Before making a decision, learn about the different types of abortion procedures and the associated...

Adoption

Are you thinking about choosing adoption for the outcome of your unplanned pregnancy? Many women consider adoption for a variety of reasons, but before you make a decision, you’ll want to consider how adoption would play out in your current situation. During the decision-making process, you may identify with some of the following statements: I...

Parenting

If you are considering parenting as the outcome for your unplanned pregnancy, you likely have many questions on how that would work in your unique situation. Parenting is a big decision, but so are your other options, which is why it should be carefully considered before making a final choice. Here are some of the...

October 2020 winner Feeding America

Charitocracy's 50th check to October winner Feeding America for $1425

We have good news about October winner Feeding America, right after this quick update...

Charitocracy turns 50.

Fifty months, that is. Today we announce our 50th monthly check!

For some of you this marks your 50th monthly contribution. Was it fifty Washingtons? Fifty Lincolns? Or even Hamiltons or Jacksons? (Can I call those Tubmans yet?!) Regardless of denomination, I appreciate every one of them! Just as much as I appreciate your 1st dollar if you only signed up this past month.

I am humbled by your continued generosity over the years, and I can't wait to see who you will nominate and vote for over the next 50 months. Rock on, donors! And don't be afraid to spread the love far and wide.

October 2020 winner Feeding America

On Halloween night we named Charitocracy's 50th monthly winner. Congratulations to Feeding America, nominated by donor zardoz. They're a national food bank responding to the needs of individuals struggling with food insecurity in the U.S. with a mission to end the fight against hunger. You can find their website here. This timely cause was stuck behind a bit of a logjam of Outer Banks charities all summer that now have their own new home. Carry on, Charitocracy USA!

Now you have a week to further sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to winner Feeding America next week.

So take a minute to watch this Feeding America PSA and feel good about your part in our collective $1425+ grant to help with their ongoing work!

Have a great November, stay safe, and be sure to log into Charitocracy to update your votes or nominate a new cause!
